Essential Oils Desk Reference:
A Must-Have to Proactively
Maintain Your Good Health

Published by Essential Science Publishing, the Essential Oils Desk Reference is currently in its 4th enhanced edition. It describes the constituents of oils and oil blends produced by the Young Living company, although the single oil information applies to any high-quality essential oil. The dedication page reads: "To all those who seek truth, light and wisdom. After all, it is their hearts that turn to the information in this book." True words for a profound book that must be a part of your library.

The 4th edition, containing 558 pages in a 10" x 12" hard-bound, illustrated, encyclopedic format, has a table of contents with color coded sections for ease of use:

Section 1: Background, Chemistry and Safety

Section 2: Single Oils

Section 3: Blends / Massage Oils

Section 4: Supplements / Hormone Therapy

Section 5: Personal Care / Animal Care

Section 6: Vita Flex / Raindrop / Auricular

Section 7: Cleansing / Dietary Programs

Section 8: Personal Usage Reference

Section 9: References / Appendices [A - T] / Index

Since most of the contents of the EODR, or EDR, as some commonly call it, is self-explanatory, additional information about the Appendices is in order. Following is a summary of a few of them, which will give you an idea of their value and importance:

Appendix A provides examples of AFNOR / ISO European and World Standards for several oils, clary sage, basic, clove, cypress, lavender, eucalyptus globules and Roman chamomile. These charts show the minimum and maximum standards and although each single oil in Section 2 also contains this information, it is informative for us as readers and researchers to see how the gas chromatograph profile renders the information. Dr. Gary Young uses these standards to ensure YLEO are up to par or exceed world standards. In the case of plants that are discovered in Ecuador and distilled for the first time, but have counterparts in common oils in North America or elsewhere, the maximum constituents may be exceeded for an even purer product.

Appendix B gives the Food "ash" pH, which is the pH of its residues or metabolites, in other words, after the food is metabolized by the body. The list provides over 150 foods' pH from Alfalfa grass to mustard to zucchini.

Appendix C lists the Essential Oils Certified as Generally Regarded As Safe (GRAF) or Food Additives by the FDA. It also lists the ones that are coded for use as flavoring agents.

Appendix D provides Bible references for eight of the 12 oils mentioned in the scripture.

Appendix E is the Application Codes that tells how the oils should be applied, and whether they should be avoided by those with photosensitive skin.

Appendix F provides two lists of ORAC data culled from USDA research at Tufts University in Boston. ORAC is a measure of the antioxidant value of foods, and stands for Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity. Two lists, essential oil antioxidant capacity and foods antioxidant capacity, are provided. While Ningxia Wolfberries has among the highest ORAC values known, food that have good quality such as lime juice and carrots are way down on the list.

This is a caution that ORAC values alone do not determine total food value. clove oil is among the strongest immune supporting and strengthening oils known, with an ORAC value of over 1 million. Myrrh is nearest to it, with a value of 379,800. All this means when you use these oils, they penetrate the skin or are ingested, as the case may be, and it is impossible for cells to be weak because the oxygenation provided is extremely strengthening. Both clove and myrrh are used medicinally and now the ORAC value tells us why they are so effective.
