ADHD

It saddens me to realize that ADHD — the Attention Deficit Hyperativity Disorder diagnosis for school tracking and medicating — has a grip on so many young people. One mother shared with me that her son had to be medicated even thoupicture of children hugginggh he was not labelled. He is “borderline,” doctors said. He is still a handful for her and his teachers alike.

This particular boy is bright, “not a bad kid,” and “easily distractable.” She revealed the many issues she was having with his father, the custody battles and carting him between homes of different family members. What child wouldn’t be angry? Or need more attention (he had four other brothers)?

I had issues when my son was in kindergarten. His ADHD test resuts were the same as this boy’s. I avoided medication by the grace of God. It was about 20 years ago, and the all-natural solution was good breakfasts daily, early bedtime, very restricted sweets and television during the week and weekend activities like karate, Saturday School and family outings. I had to monitor his every move.

I wish I had had pure essential oils (EOs) back then, but I didn’t.

Heal The Hyper in ADHD
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is a terrible misnomer. Children, especially boys, need play time, nap time, to run and climb and to expxress themselves fully. Many schools don’t even have naptime anymore for younger grades.

Energy techniques, and using pure, undiluted EOs can help parents and guardians take control and BE in control.

Raising body frequency lowers stress levels and the fight-or-flight feelings you and your children may have. One friend used lavender oil on her son who was on Ritalin. She found he did MUCH better and he began to request her nightly rubbing of his feet. She relaxed as well.

Of course, massaging the children with coconut oil, shea butter, or without any special substance is also extremely beneficial in calming them down at bedtime. If you haven’t already, cultivate the massaging skill.

If you choose to use aromatics, here are the top three oils for reducing the hyper in a child’s activity:

  • lavender

  • cedarwood

  • vetiver

EOs for children must be in their pure, unadulterated form (see Safety Notice below). Here’s the summary of the research that yielded these top oils: (Thanks to Carol Faust and Jennifer Rabalais)

Dr. Terry Friedman did a study a few years ago on ADD [and] ADHD and the oils. Here’s the ‘short version’ with someone quoting EO educator Vicki Opfer.

“This case study was conducted for two years, from 1999-2001. Using children between the ages of 6 to 12 years, twenty subjects not diagnosed with ADD/ADHD were used as the control group. Twenty subjects with a confirmed diagnosis of ADD/ADHD were used as the study group.

“Each group was pre-tested using a baseline evaluation with real time EEG and the T.O.V.A. Scale.

“The essential oils chosen for the case study were Lavender, Vetiver, Cedarwood and [a blend of Frankincense, Sandalwood, Melissa, Cedarwood, Blue Cypress, Lavender and Helichrysum].

“The oils were administered in this fashion: one of the oils were administered by inhalation 3 times a day for 30 days. An inhalation device was also used at night to administer a continuous inhalation of oil.

“The subject then inhaled when needed, about 3 times during the day when they began to feel ‘scattered’. The inhalation of the oils proved to settle the brainwaves back into normal patterns and improved their scholastic performance and behavioral patterns.

“Each subject was tested on each oil for 30 days and then reevaluated by testing. Then another oil was used for 30 days and reevaluated, until each of the oils had been tested. Lastly, oil combinations were used, each for a 30 day period….

“The final results were: Lavender increased performance by 53%, Cedarwood increased performance by 83% and Vetiver increased performance by 100%.”

Safety Notice
Recommendations are not meant to replace medical advice. See your medical practitioner for long-standing problems. Inform him or her about your use of pure oils. You must follow your doctor’s advice.

Test one or two drops of oil in an inconspicuous area before use. Asthmatics or others sensitive to scent should use just one drop and only on the soles of the feet. Oils can be used on pillows and linens but take care, they may stain.

Start with less oil, not more, to gauge impact. You may increase drop by drop and take note of changes. Always rub hands together to inhale at least 3x whenever applying to body or soles of feet.

Redness, outbreaks or itching means too much oil. Wait a day for the body to adjust to the powerful natural energy of oils before resuming use. Dilute with sesame, olive or coconut oils or shea butter. Never water!
